Summer is all about traditions, whether it’s cannonballs off the diving board or counting the stairs on the climb up the Harbour Town lighthouse. This season, when childhood reigns, makes me nostalgic for my own childhood traditions, from firefly-catching in Atlanta to wave-riding on Hilton Head. Picking up steamed local shrimp from the Pig’s back-of-the-store Fish & Tail shop for Fourth of July is among my summertime rituals when staying at my mom’s on Hilton Head Island. It’s like finding that one authentic barefoot beach bum in a sea of Parrothead yuppies. On this posh island with $275 tee times and $6,000-a-week, three-bedroom rentals, the vintage Piggly Wiggly is a refreshing, down-to-earth relic. And yes, the landmark store has a sign that boldly lists butt wipes right above paper towels and bread on Aisle 10. Yes, there’s still a Piggly Wiggly within about an hour’s drive from Savannah. That sign atop Aisle 10 in the Piggly Wiggly at Coligny Plaza attracts the attention of many kids - mine included - when shopping at the five-decade-old, eclectic Hilton Head Island institution. The Island Fudge shop and the French Kiss Bakery offer delicious treats for you and your family, Java Joe's is a favorite coffee shop among locals, Skillets is an excellent choice for brunch and Vine is one of Hilton Head's finest restaurants with exquisite cuisine and an extensive wine menu.“The preacher says all my sins are washed away, including that Piggly Wiggly I knocked over in Yazoo.’’ - Delmar O’Donnell, “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” It features many eateries, some unique and some familiar. The plaza also has much to offer in the way of cuisine. Numerous clothes and accessory stores can keep you up to date on all the latest fashions, including Island Girl for fashionable kids clothing, Camp Hilton Head for T-shirts and souvenirs and the Quiet Storm Surf Shop. It has since been fully renovated and reopened as the Coligny Theatre with focus on art films and features from independent producers that target an upscale adult audience.Ĭoligny Plaza’s location makes for a great shopping experience and advertises itself as being exactly 73 steps from the beach. Originally named The Island Theater, the Coligny Theatre opened in 1972 and was for many years the only theater on Hilton Head. Two main features of Coligny Plaza are the Piggly Wiggly grocery store with some of the island's best local seafood and the Coligny Theater. Summer nights feature free live entertainment, ranging from concerts to magic shows. It features over 50 specialty shops and restaurants that provide unique products, services, and experiences. The plaza surrounds a duck pond, where visitors can view wildlife indigenous to the Island. Coligny Plaza offers shopping, dining, groceries, live entertainment and service experiences in the heart of Hilton Head's "downtown." The original shopping center of Hilton Head, Coligny Plaza has been a local and guest favoriate for over 40 years.
